SONAHHR RELEASES SEVENTY ALL- BLACK HOCKEY TEAM ROSTERS FROM 1894 -1936
Posted: October 24, 2006 by GEORGE
New York City. 10/24/06. The Society of North American Hockey Historians And Researchers ("Sonahhr") www.sonahhr.com today released the first-ever list of all-black hockey team rosters from 1894-1936.
The rosters, compiled by Canadian historians George and Darril Fosty, are the culmination of nine years of research into African-Canadian Ice Hockey History.
The Fosty's, authors of Black Ice: The Lost History of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, 1895-1925 (Stryker-Indigo Publishing, New York, 2004) www.blackicebook.com are two of the most outspoken Canadian historians in ice hockey today, and are a driving force behind the study and preservation of minority ice hockey history in North America. They are the founders of Sonahhr and co-founders of the recently established Black Ice Hockey And Sports Hall of Fame in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Though a number of the rosters are incomplete, the list of seventy All-Black Teams represents a major step forward in the identification of black athletes who played in the Colored Hockey League between 1894 and 1930. Of particular note, are references to teams that existed between 1895 -1900 when the League was in its infancy.
The period from 1905-1910 is also of particular interest to hockey historians, on account of the fact that this was when the Colored Hockey League had been denied ice time in the hockey arenas of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was forced to play its games on area ponds in and around the Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia region.
This is the second major effort by the Fosty's to preserve African-Canadian hockey history. On October 10, 2004, through their company Stryker-Indigo New York, they announced that they had donated their entire Black History Research and Artifacts Collection to the Black Cultural Centre of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in an attempt to augment the Centre's current collections and to preserve the legacy of black history in Canada.
It is hoped that the release of the rosters will aid hockey historians in efforts to identify additional players and teams.
Nearly 400 African -Canadians and African-Americans are believed to have played on All-Black hockey teams between the 1880s -1930s.
